A 1960s colour photo of the exterior of the passenger terminal at Shannon Airport (Saor-Aerfort na Sionna), County Clare, Ireland in 1969. The building features a minimalist, mid-century design with large glass windows and a prominent section of red-toned stone masonry. The airport’s name is displayed in both Irish and English on the cream-coloured upper facade. A group of spectators is visible on an open-air observation balcony, leaning against the metal railings to watch the activity on the airfield. In the foreground, a simple white sign with black lettering points toward the “ENTRANCE GATES TO TERMINAL BUILDING,” capturing the unhurried atmosphere of international travel in the West of Ireland during the late 60s.
Today, Shannon Airport remains a vital transatlantic gateway, though its infrastructure has been significantly expanded and modernised since 1969. The original terminal building seen here has been integrated into a much larger complex featuring state-of-the-art security, duty-free shopping, and the first U.S. Customs and Border Protection pre-clearance facility in Europe. While the observation balconies that were a staple of the latter half of the 20th century are now largely closed for security, the airport continues to celebrate its heritage as the birthplace of duty-free.
