Shanklin station on the Isle of Wight in 1990, with RydeRail Class 485 unit 485041 standing at the buffer stops beside the platform in bright low winter sun. The view is full of useful period detail, including the prominent red buffer stop, the yellow cab front with RydeRail branding, the red-painted lamp standards and canopy supports, the brick station building with its slate roof and decorative ridge tiles, and the bright red wheeled bin standing by the fence at right. This was one of the most distinctive corners of the British Rail network at the time, where elderly ex-London Underground stock still worked regular island services, and the contrast between the faded modern train livery and Shanklin’s old-fashioned station architecture gives the scene much of its character.
