This 1980s photograph shows the Serpentine Restaurant in Hyde Park, one of London’s more distinctive post-war park buildings, with its striking pyramid-shaped glass rooflights rising above a heavy concrete terrace. Crowds gather outside in the warm weather, while people sit and stroll beside the flower beds and open parkland around the entrance, capturing the building in use as a busy lakeside refreshment spot. Designed in a bold modern style, the restaurant stood out sharply from its green surroundings and became a familiar part of Hyde Park for several decades. It is a strong period record of the South Bank-in-the-park look of late twentieth-century leisure architecture, before later changes and eventual demolition altered this part of the Serpentine completely.
