A lively spring scene at the striking Serpentine Restaurant, designed by architect Patrick Gwynne (1913–2003) for Fortes and opened in 1964. Its futuristic, pyramid-topped structure was admired but, by most accounts, never profitable—perhaps explaining its relatively short lifespan before demolition in 1989. The car park in front is a wonderful snapshot of early-70s motoring. In the centre is a white Vauxhall Victor, with the interesting black Mk2 Cortina Coupé parked to the left. Behind the Fiat and Mercedes sits a Rover P6, while the classic Ford Prefect peeks in from the right. The MGB in the distance carries the registration DOY 406J. Families stroll toward the restaurant terrace overlooking the Serpentine, capturing Hyde Park at its most relaxed and optimistic.
