This candid photograph captures a performer dressed in bright striped trousers, a satin coat, and a green top hat using one of the Bell System’s experimental “serpentine” phone booths. Installed throughout the fairgrounds, these curved blue fiberglass structures were designed to offer a futuristic alternative to traditional enclosed booths while allowing passers-by to see and experience public communication in a more open, modern form.
The phones were part of the Bell System’s effort to showcase the future of telecommunication, complementing the nearby Bell Pavilion where visitors could view demonstrations of touch-tone dialing and preview the Picturephone — early video calling technology introduced to the public for the first time at the fair. Around the performer, fairgoers stroll through tree-lined walkways, souvenir stalls, and outdoor plazas, reflecting the lively, carnival-like atmosphere that made the fair both a technological showcase and a cultural spectacle.
While most of the futuristic booths were removed after the fair, they remain a memorable symbol of the era’s optimism and the belief that everyday technology — even a simple phone call — would soon feel like part of tomorrow.
