A busy summer scene at the seafront paddling pool in Brighton during the 1950s. Children splash and play in the shallow concrete pool while parents watch from the edges, many dressed in rolled-up trousers, shirts and summer dresses typical of the period.
Behind the pool, Brighton’s dense run of seafront hotels and boarding houses rises along the promenade, their white façades and balconies forming a familiar backdrop to post-war seaside holidays. Such paddling pools were a key feature of British resorts at mid-century, offering safe, supervised water play at a time when foreign travel was still out of reach for most families.
Most of Brighton’s open-air paddling pools were later removed or filled in as tastes, safety standards and seafront layouts changed, making scenes like this an evocative record of everyday leisure on the south coast in the 1950s.
