A 1970s colour photo of the main terminal building at Schiphol Amsterdam Airport in 1977. The large, modernist structure features the prominent “Schiphol Amsterdam” signage in white lettering against a dark facade. Below the sign, multiple levels of glass-fronted galleries are visible, with crowds of spectators lining the open-air observation decks to watch the airfield activity. In the foreground on the concrete apron, a white and blue Air Total fuel tanker is parked near a passenger boarding bridge at gate B21. A red and white airport service car and various ground personnel are also active on the tarmac, capturing the busy, efficient atmosphere of one of Europe’s premier aviation hubs during the late 70s.
Today, Amsterdam Schiphol (AMS) has transformed into a massive multi-terminal city-airport, having undergone numerous expansions since 1977. While the core architectural language of the piers and the iconic observation deck remains a beloved part of the airport’s identity, the facilities have been updated with state-of-the-art security, digital passenger processing, and expanded retail areas. The vintage fuel tankers and service vehicles seen here have long since been replaced by modern, high-capacity equipment and electric ground fleets.
