This was a full size replica of the flagship of Christopher Columbus’ discovery fleet and was built in Barcelona and shipped over on a freighter. Getting it the five miles from the port to the fair took a week and was fraught with difficulties with wires and tree limbs tore down and the truck getting stuck in soft asphalt!
After the fair it was sent to the Potomac River in Washington as a tourist attraction but this flopped so in 1969 it was acquired by the mayor of St Louis as another tourist draw – two months after arrival it was sunk in a storm! It was raised and repaired but in 1973 it was sold yet again to someone in Titusville, Florida and the following year it was destroyed by fire.
