Sandown station on the Isle of Wight in 1990, with Class 483 unit 483001 standing in the platform while older RydeRail stock, including Class 485 unit 485044, can be seen on the adjacent line beside the signal box. The photograph is full of useful period detail, including the yellow cab front, red lamp standards, bicycles stacked by the station building, the low island platform and the white-painted signal box looking down over the line. This was a particularly interesting moment on the Island Line, as the new Class 483 trains converted from former London Underground stock had begun to appear alongside the elderly ex-Tube trains they were replacing, giving Sandown an unusually mixed and transitional railway scene in the final years of British Rail on the island.
