The historic High Street of Hereford is captured in this authentic 1970s colour photograph from 1978, documenting a popular corner of the city next to All Saints Church. The archival image focuses on a striking black and white timber-framed building with decorative gables and leaded windows. At street level, the building houses “Salisburys,” a retailer of handbags and luggage currently advertising “Final Reductions,” and the iconic “Golden Egg” restaurant. Known as a quintessential British “greasy spoon” of the era, the Golden Egg features bold yellow and blue 3D lettering and posters in the window promoting a “Square Deal Dinner.” Inside, green tufted leather booths are visible. The stone masonry of All Saints Church rises prominently in the background. This factual record preserves the vibrant commercial life of Hereford in the late 1970s, showcasing a site that has since transitioned, with the church now serving as a cafe and arts centre and the retail units occupied by Boots.
