Salisbury station in 1992, with a Network SouthEast train standing at the opposite platform beneath the long canopy and its dense run of cast-iron columns and white valancing. The scene is rich in recognisable station detail, including the red platform bench, hanging baskets, platform number signs for 6 and 3, the worn brick platform face, and the wet rails and paving that give the whole view a damp, subdued early-1990s atmosphere. The train’s red, white and blue Network SouthEast livery adds a strong period marker, contrasting with the much older station architecture and showing Salisbury at a point when British Rail’s modern sector branding sat alongside the Victorian character of one of the South’s most distinctive junction stations.
