The Sacred Heart Catholic Church on Lumley Street in Barrow-in-Furness, photographed in 1958. Built in red brick with Gothic Revival detailing, the church presents a solid, almost industrial character that reflects Barrow’s rapid late-Victorian and Edwardian expansion as a shipbuilding and steelmaking town.
The long nave runs parallel to the street behind a low brick boundary wall, with the tower rising behind the main body of the church. At the time this photograph was taken, the surrounding streets were still closely tied to nearby dockyard and industrial employment, and the church served a large Catholic community drawn to Barrow by work at Vickers and associated industries.
Much of the church’s exterior survives, making this a clear record of Lumley Street before later changes to traffic, housing, and urban layout in this part of Barrow-in-Furness.
