This 1987 view looks along Russell Street towards Covent Garden Market, whose glass-roofed halls and colonnaded frontage fill the end of the street beyond the traffic. The road is lined with parked cars and vans of the period, while the pavements are busy with shoppers and visitors, reflecting Covent Garden’s growing success as a revived retail and leisure destination in the 1980s. On the left a red awning advertises a bar, café, restaurant, while on the right the dark awnings and traditional shopfronts help frame the approach to the piazza. It is a strong record of Covent Garden after its reinvention, when the former fruit and vegetable market had become one of central London’s busiest visitor areas but still retained a distinctly rougher, more everyday late-twentieth-century street scene.
