The Royalty and Empire Exhibition in Windsor in 1989, showing a waxworks tableau of guardsmen, ceremonial carriages and royal pageantry inside the former Windsor & Eton Central station complex. The scene is arranged as a grand parade ground display, with rows of Guards in red tunics and bearskins, horse-drawn carriages, hanging lanterns and red, blue and gold bunting along the wooden galleries. The attraction was created by British Rail and Madame Tussauds after the station was restored in the early 1980s, and it used wax models and audio-visual displays to recreate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations of 1897. This photograph captures the exhibition’s theatrical approach to royal history, combining wax figures, military ceremony, Victorian nostalgia and tourist entertainment in a highly staged late-1980s Windsor setting.
