The royal wedding train passes through West Byfleet in 1981, with crowds packed along both platforms and lining the bridge to wave Union flags as Charles and Diana travelled on their way to honeymoon at Broadlands after the wedding. The scene is full of vivid period detail, including the blue-and-grey train with its bright yellow cab front, the dense rows of people pressed against the platform edges and fences, West Byfleet nameboards, tall platform lamps, a yellow litter bin and the sea of raised arms greeting the train as it moves through the station. It is a remarkable everyday-suburban view turned briefly ceremonial, with an ordinary Surrey station transformed by flags, summer clothes and the excitement of one of the most watched royal occasions of the era.
