A 1970 color photo of a royal visit to Honolulu International Airport, Hawaii, during a brief stopover by Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip, and Princess Anne en route to New Zealand. The royals are seen descending a mobile staircase from a BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) Vickers VC10, registration G-ASGD. A red carpet is rolled out on the tarmac, flanked by a military guard of honor in white uniforms and pith helmets. A large crowd of press photographers and spectators is gathered to the left, capturing the moment. In the busy background, several airport service vehicles are visible, including an “EMERY AIR FREIGHT” van and a United Air Lines flight kitchen truck, alongside other aircraft parked on the sun-drenched apron.
Today, Honolulu International Airport has been renamed Daniel K. Inouye International Airport and has undergone extensive modernization to serve as the primary gateway to the Hawaiian Islands. The Vickers VC10, once a flagship of British long-haul aviation known for its distinct rear-mounted engines, was retired from commercial service in the early 1980s. BOAC merged with BEA in 1974 to form British Airways, making this 1970 image a notable record of the airline’s historic role in royal transport. While the airport remains a vital Pacific hub, the vintage ground equipment and the specific terminal backdrop seen here have long since been updated.
