Spectators gather at a polo match in Windsor Great Park in 1956, with players, horses and parked cars spread across the edge of the playing field. Polo had long been associated with the British aristocracy and royal household, and events such as this were a familiar feature of Windsor’s summer social calendar in the post-war years.
Among the crowd are Queen Elizabeth II and the young Prince Charles, then aged eight, attending alongside family members. On the right is an Aston Martin Lagonda bearing the registration OXR 1, owned by Prince Philip and delivered to him in 1954. The car later became one of the most recognisable royal vehicles of the period.
Parked nearby is a Morris Minor, along with other British saloons typical of the mid-1950s, helping to date the scene. Players in traditional polo kit stand beside their ponies, with mallets and tack little changed in design from earlier decades. The image captures a relaxed moment in royal sporting life, combining ceremonial tradition with the everyday look of post-war Britain.
