Royal Mile from Castlehill, Edinburgh, 1973. Looking east down the Royal Mile from Castlehill, this view captures the steep fall of the High Street with a fine run of dark stone tenements, churches and civic buildings leading towards the heart of the Old Town. On the right, the frontage of The Pipers Corner stands beside a brightly lit The Scottish Shop, with a Car park direction sign outside, while the street itself is filled with period traffic including several small saloons and Minis climbing and descending the slope. The mixture of traditional shopfronts, heavy Edinburgh stonework, globe street lamps and busy pavements gives the scene the unmistakable character of the Royal Mile before later tourist-driven changes to many of its ground-floor businesses.
