Royal Mail float, Waverley Bridge, Edinburgh, 1979. This colourful parade scene on Waverley Bridge shows a bright red Royal Mail promotional float decorated with large stamp designs and the slogans “Year of the Child” and “Collect British Stamps”. The display is filled with costumed characters and oversized animal figures, including what appear to be Beatrix Potter characters shown on the stamp panels, while a postman figure stands at the centre of the moving tableau. In the background can be seen part of the grand roofline of the North British Hotel, now the Balmoral, placing the scene firmly in central Edinburgh and giving the photograph a lively late-1970s festival or civic procession atmosphere.
