This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the Royal Festival Hall on London’s South Bank in 1963, shortly after the historic lead shot tower was demolished to make way for further redevelopment. The modernist structure, originally built for the 1951 Festival of Britain, is seen here with its expansive glass frontage and tiered levels overlooking the River Thames. Behind the hall, the newly completed Shell Centre and other mid-century office blocks punctuate the skyline under a bright, cloud-filled sky. The river is at low tide, revealing the mudbanks and the concrete embankments that line the shore. To the left, a wooden pier structure extends into the water, while Hungerford Bridge is partially visible on the far right.
