This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures a unique view of the Royal Festival Hall, highlighting its connection to the 1951 Festival of Britain. To the left of the external steps, the mural titled Seaside is clearly visible; it was designed by Eric Brown and Peter Chamberlin of the Kingston School of Art as part of the Festival’s “Seaside” section. The mural, which depicted a quintessential English seaside town, served as a vibrant backdrop to the modernist architecture of the South Bank site. While much of the Festival’s temporary structures were dismantled in 1952, this image provides a rare record of the artistic integration that defined the “New Elizabethan” style of the era. The Royal Festival Hall itself, designed by Leslie Martin, Peter Moro, and Robert Matthew, remains the only permanent building from the 1951 exhibition.
