Rock Circus, London Pavilion, Piccadilly Circus, 1989. This lively interior view shows promotional staff handing out leaflets beneath the bright mirrored lights and escalators of Rock Circus, the short-lived but fondly remembered music attraction housed inside the redeveloped London Pavilion at Piccadilly Circus. Signs for Rock Circus and Rock Island can be seen behind the crowd, while the colourful dresses, late-1980s hairstyles and glossy interior finishes give the scene a very clear end-of-decade feel. Opened in 1989 and created by The Tussauds Group, Rock Circus combined wax figures, music, light effects and animatronics in an attempt to turn the London Pavilion into a pop and rock-themed visitor attraction. It lasted until 2001, making images like this a good record of one of the West End’s more unusual late-20th-century entertainments.
