1950 photograph showing the ocean liner RMS Queen Mary passing along the south coast of England. The ship is seen from another boat, with the curved metal railing in the foreground framing the scene. By 1950, Queen Mary had returned to civilian service after extensive wartime use as a troopship, once again operating transatlantic crossings for Cunard. Her distinctive profile — three funnels, long black hull and red boot topping — made her instantly recognisable from shore and a familiar sight to coastal observers as she entered or left British waters. This photograph captures the liner during her post-war peak, when she remained one of the most famous passenger ships in the world, years before the decline of the great ocean liner era brought about by jet air travel.
