This early-1980s view looks across the Thames towards St Paul’s Cathedral, whose great dome rises above a broad stretch of cleared riverside land on the north bank. In the foreground a passenger boat crosses the river, while behind it the long empty frontage marks the former site of Sunlight Wharf and Paul’s Wharf, both demolished in the 1970s. For a time the cleared ground remained open and undeveloped, giving this part of the City an unusually bare appearance beneath the cathedral, before construction of the City of London School began in the late 1980s. The photograph is a particularly useful record of that short-lived interim period, when one of the most historic stretches of the Thames waterfront was briefly reduced to open space beneath the skyline of St Paul’s.
