This 1980s view looks across the Thames towards the north bank, with HMS Glasserton berthed at Victoria Embankment beneath the dome of St Paul’s Cathedral. The former Ton-class minesweeper, seen here in her later static Thames role, sits among a varied riverside skyline of ornate Victorian buildings, post-war office blocks and the great bulk of the cathedral rising above them all. The contrast between the small naval vessel and the monumental City backdrop gives the photograph much of its appeal, while the open stretch of river in the foreground preserves the feel of central London before later waterfront changes. Glasserton was moored here from 1981 until being broken up in 1987, making this a good record of a short-lived but distinctive sight on the Thames during that period.
