This 1980s view looks across the Thames from the south bank just east of Blackfriars Bridge, with the City skyline spread out behind the north shore and the NatWest Tower rising prominently in the background. In the foreground, the exposed foreshore, a small moored barge and a larger working craft near the opposite bank give the river a far more industrial feel than the scene has today. Most of the riverside buildings seen here have since disappeared, and the later construction of the Millennium Bridge now cuts directly through this view, making the photograph a useful record of a vanished stretch of the Thames waterfront. Apart from the tower itself, much of this City-edge skyline has been rebuilt, so the image captures a short-lived stage between the older post-war riverside and the more heavily redeveloped London that followed.
