View along the River Ouse in York, photographed in 1956 from Lendal Bridge. The river frontage is lined with historic civic and institutional buildings, their stone façades rising directly from the water’s edge and reflecting York’s long association with the Ouse as both a defensive boundary and a commercial artery.
On the left are medieval and later structures associated with the city’s former civic and ecclesiastical functions, while further along the river are warehouses and public buildings that once relied on river traffic for supplies and trade. A small boat moves along the Ouse in the foreground, adding a note of everyday river life to the scene.
Much of this riverside townscape survives today, making this view a valuable record of York’s historic river frontage before later alterations to flood defences and riverside access.
