The scene is full of useful period detail, including the black “British Rail Richmond” sign, the Westminster House building to the left, London Transport roundels at the stop, “No Entry” signs, poster cases, and a row of everyday early-1980s vehicles including black cabs, vans and saloons gathered outside the station. Richmond had been rebuilt by Southern Railway in 1937 to a design led by architect James Robb Scott, and this view captures that Art Deco-era station still doing everyday work in the British Rail years, before later restoration brought back more of its original finish.
