The Richborough Power Station near Sandwich, Kent, is captured in this authentic 1970s colour photograph from 1971, documenting a major landmark of South East England’s industrial infrastructure. The archival image showcases the site’s three prominent hyperboloid concrete cooling towers and its singular tall chimney stack, which is seen emitting a plume of white water vapour into the overcast sky. To the left, the massive, functionalist grey blocks of the main generating station are visible, housing the turbine hall and boilers. The foreground consists of the low-lying, scrubby marshland of the Stour Valley, typical of the East Kent landscape. This factual record preserves the power station during its operational peak as a coal-and-oil-fired facility, before its eventual decommissioning and the demolition of the iconic towers in 2012, capturing a significant chapter in the UK’s post-war energy history.
