Regent Street St James’s, London, in 1977, looking north towards the domed offices of the Westminster & County Insurance Offices, by then signed for the Sun Alliance & London Insurance Group. The street is busy with black cabs, saloons and evening pedestrians, while on the right a large Union flag hangs above a row of shopfronts and signs including Ceylon Tea Centre and other Piccadilly Circus-bound businesses. On the left, the formal stone frontage and banners of the Royal Academy of Arts help anchor the scene at the southern end of Regent Street. With its mix of grand Edwardian architecture, traffic lights, illuminated commercial lettering and everyday late-1970s traffic, this is a strong evening view of central London before later streetscape changes and the reduction of overhead signs.
