Regent Street and Piccadilly Circus, London, 1973. Looking south along Regent Street towards Piccadilly Circus, this view captures the West End before the later rebuilding of the famous advertising corner. On the left, the frontage of the Café Royal is dressed with flags and signs including Le Relais, while ahead the circus is packed with bright billboard advertising for Max Factor, Skol, Ferrero, Gordon’s and Carry the fresh flavour. The large curved billboard at the London Pavilion is showing Heavy Traffic, Ralph Bakshi’s cult animated film of 1973. The street itself is busy with red London Transport buses, black cabs, other period cars and a central traffic island, all framed by the sweeping curves of Nash’s Regent Street terraces.
