Ceylon Wharf on the south bank of the Thames in 1971, seen from the river with a barge moored in front of the old warehouse and crane. The great painted wharf lettering still dominates the building, while the dark riverside structure at the left is part of Red Lion Wharf, another long-established Bankside riverside site nearby. Both wharves stood on this stretch between Southwark Bridge and Cannon Street Railway Bridge, an area once lined with commercial riverfront warehouses and handling points. By the time this photograph was taken, the working Thames was already in visible decline, and much of the surrounding Bankside waterfront would soon be altered by redevelopment. It is a wonderfully atmospheric river view, with the old wharf architecture, moored craft and fading industrial signage capturing a part of London that has largely disappeared.
