Rebuilt Patriot 45530 Sir Frank Ree at Willesden in 1963, standing in a grimy depot scene amid scrap rails, sleepers, ash and lines of other steam locomotives. The photograph gives a good side view of this powerful LMS-designed 4-6-0, showing the rebuilt form of the class with its Stanier-style boiler, tender and cab, while the smoke-stained smokebox door, green livery and red buffer beam underline the hard-used look of late British Rail steam. Built in 1933 and rebuilt in 1946, No. 45530 was one of the last of the rebuilt Patriots to survive, and this rather stark North London shed view catches the class in its final years, when engines like this were still at work but already surrounded by the worn, rundown atmosphere of steam’s closing days.
