This 1986 view looks across the Thames towards Ratcliff Beach near Limehouse, where old riverside warehouse buildings and newer redevelopment stand side by side along the foreshore. The most distinctive surviving industrial feature is the large arched Emergency Sewer Outflow for North London, visible at low tide near the centre-left of the scene, part of Joseph Bazalgette’s great Victorian sewer system dating from 1861. Around it are former wharf buildings and converted riverside premises, while cranes and scaffolded construction on the left show how much this stretch of the Thames was changing in the mid-1980s. It is a strong record of East London’s riverfront in transition, with the remains of working dockside infrastructure still plainly visible beside the first waves of modern redevelopment.
