Queensway, Bayswater, London, in 1976, looking along a busy pavement lined with small shops, cafés and restaurants serving this notably mixed part of west London. On the left is a branch of Pearl Stewart, while the Chinese restaurant with the bold character sign is Kam Tong, which remains open today. Farther along, Bayswater Underground station is just visible, and in the distance the dome belongs to Whiteleys department store, one of Queensway’s best-known landmarks. Parked vans and cars crowd the kerb on the right, and the pedestrians in flared trousers, shirts and jackets give the whole scene an unmistakably mid-1970s feel. It is a strong everyday view of Queensway before later chain stores and redevelopment reshaped much of Bayswater’s shopping streetscape.
