Queensway, Bayswater in 1976. A wonderfully atmospheric view of Queensway in the mid-1970s. Parked in the foreground is a Chrysler Alpine – one of the new generation of hatchbacks arriving on British roads at the time. To the right is the Maharaja Indian restaurant, its ornate frontage instantly recognisable; remarkably, it’s still trading today, making it one of Queensway’s longest-established eateries. Next door sits the New Lee Ho Fook restaurant, part of the wave of Chinese eateries that helped define Bayswater’s cosmopolitan feel during the period. On the left, the yellow-fronted Unitex shop and the delivery van disappearing out of shot add to the everyday bustle of a street that has always mixed residential life, independent shops and international cuisine.
