Behind the bandstand stands the Queensway Store, which opened in 1958 as Crawley’s first department store. Specialising in furniture, carpets and household goods, it was aimed squarely at the thousands of young families moving into the town’s newly built housing estates during the late 1950s. The clean-lined commercial architecture contrasts with the more traditional bandstand structure in the foreground.
The scene captures Queens Square at an early stage in Crawley’s development, before later redevelopment and retail expansion reshaped the town centre in subsequent decades.
