The Queen’s Hotel in Cliftonville, Margate, is captured in this authentic 1970s colour photograph, documenting the changing landscape of the Kent coast during the decade. Although Butlin’s purchased the hotel in 1955 and sold it in 1968, the archival image shows that many distinctive Butlin’s-era features remained in 1971, including the iconic large toy soldier figures mounted on the white facade. The building’s exterior serves as a vibrant backdrop for signage advertising the “Hippocampo Discotheque,” “Highcliffe Bar,” and “Queens Theatre,” alongside a prominent red “Motel” entrance sign. In the foreground, a pedestrian passes a “Pig & Whistle” show advertisement and an “Evening News” stand, reflecting the local leisure culture of the time. This factual record preserves the hotel’s appearance in its final decade before it was demolished in 1979, capturing a unique transitional period in the history of Cliftonville’s holiday accommodation.
