This authentic 1950s colour photograph captures the “Lion of England,” the first of ten heraldic sculptures known as The Queen’s Beasts, commissioned for the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953. Designed by sculptor James Woodford, the crowned lion is depicted in a regal, seated pose holding a shield emblazoned with the Royal Arms. The sculpture, made of plaster with a stone-like finish, is positioned against the wall of the temporary Westminster Abbey annexe, which is decorated with several smaller relief crowns. A crowd of visitors in mid-century attire—including women in floral dresses and hats—is seen gathered in the foreground, admiring the display. This archival record is an exceptional resource for those interested in British heraldry, royal history, or as a nostalgic piece of vintage wall art.
