The paddle steamer Princess Elizabeth lies moored on the Thames in 1970, with clouds of smoke rising from demolition works behind her. Built in 1927, she spent her pre-war years running pleasure trips from south-coast resorts, before playing a remarkable role at Dunkirk — first as a minesweeper and then as an evacuation vessel, making four crossings and rescuing more than 1,600 troops. By 1970 she had been converted into a static floating restaurant, her engines and boiler removed. During her Thames years (1970–87) she was photographed in various moorings, initially just east of Tower Bridge and later west of London Bridge. Following an extensive restoration, the Princess Elizabeth is now back in Dunkirk, where she operates as an upmarket bar and restaurant — a fitting tribute to one of the most famous “Little Ships” of 1940.
