This 1986 view shows the Prospect of Whitby at Wapping, one of London’s best-known Thames-side pubs, seen from the river with the foreshore exposed at low tide. The white-painted frontage, riverside balcony and steep stairs down to the mud all emphasise its long connection with the working river, while the older brick buildings and scaffolding behind hint at the changes already under way in dockland London during the 1980s. The Chef & Brewer sign places it firmly in its period, before later refurbishments and branding changes, and the whole scene still feels more like an old riverside tavern hemmed in by wharf buildings than the cleaned-up historic attraction it became later. It is a strong record of Wapping in transition, with one of its most famous surviving riverside pubs still rooted in a visibly tougher dockside setting.
