This busy east-end street scene looks along Princes Street with pedestrians crossing in the foreground and a dense line of shops, hotels, buses and traffic stretching towards Calton Hill. On the left is the Old Waverley Hotel, while farther along the street the sign for the Royal British Hotel can be seen above the rooftops. The view also catches the familiar contrast of older Victorian stone buildings alongside plainer modern frontages that had come to define parts of Princes Street by the late 1970s.
There is plenty of searchable period detail here, including Dunn & Co on the corner, Penneys, C&A, and directional signs for the tourist information office and Edinburgh Castle. An Eastern Scottish bus is waiting in traffic, another bus stands farther ahead, and the road is filled with everyday late-1970s cars and vans as shoppers make their way across the junction. In the distance, the skyline is closed by Calton Hill, with its monuments just visible beyond the end of the street.
