In the 1960s, Edinburgh’s Princes Street was not only the city’s premier shopping destination—it was also one of its busiest transport arteries. Stretching along the edge of the New Town with sweeping views of Edinburgh Castle and the Old Town, the street thrummed with activity. And much of that activity came from the seemingly endless procession of buses.
During this era, Princes Street functioned as a major hub for Lothian Region Transport and other local bus operators. It wasn’t uncommon to see lines of double-deckers—often Leyland Titans and Daimlers—stacked nose-to-tail along both sides of the street. Buses in cream, maroon, and green liveries carried commuters, shoppers, and schoolchildren to and from all corners of the city and suburbs.
There’s at least 30 buses in this photo alone!
