This 1989 view of Portobello Road captures a group of Hare Krishna devotees moving through the market in devotional procession, singing and playing hand cymbals as shoppers and stallholders look on. Behind them are some very clear local details, including the Red Lion 165 sign, Portobello Antiques, and the hanging sign of The Portobello Star, helping to place the scene firmly in this busy stretch of the road. The mixture of robes, winter layers, passing traffic and curious onlookers gives the photograph a vivid sense of Portobello’s street life, where market trading, performance, religion and everyday London bustle could all overlap in the same moment. It is a strong late-1980s record of the area before later gentrification changed much of the street’s appearance and character.
