This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures a beloved local character at the bustling Portobello Market in 1965. The central figure is a man known as “Uncle Steptoe,” a familiar sight at the market from the 1950s through to the 1970s. He is seen wearing a dark top hat with the word “UNCLE” written on it, leaning over an old pram that has been converted into a mobile musical station. A large piece of cardboard rests on the pram with the handwritten words “HER MASTER’S VOICE,” indicating the record player kept inside to entertain passers-by for spare change. To his left, a man in a dark pinstripe suit and glasses watches on, while a woman in a black raincoat and green headscarf walks past. The background reveals the vibrant atmosphere of the West London market, with green awnings, a “Kodak” film sign, and a row of parked vintage vehicles including a light green car and a red and white Volkswagen camper van.
