This authentic 1960s colour photograph captures the legendary Portobello Road character known as “Uncle Steptoe” during a market day in 1965. Wearing his trademark black top hat with “UNCLE STEPTOE” handwritten on it and a long white scarf, he is seen operating a vintage gramophone housed inside a black pram. A man in a grey suit jacket leans in to listen, while several copper coins are visible on the pram’s cover, given by entertained passers-by. In the background, the storefront at number 142 is occupied by the “Bachelor” newsagents, featuring signs for “Capstan” and “Player’s” cigarettes. This specific building would later achieve cinematic fame as the location for the travel bookshop in the 1999 movie Notting Hill. To the right, the shop of “F. Bennett… Butcher” is visible under a red awning, while a tall blue billboard for “Tipped Weights” cigarettes looms above the street.
