This 1967 view at Pontins South Devon Holiday Camp, Paignton, shows the moments before a donkey derby, with a crowd gathered around the roped-off course on a grassy slope below one of the camp’s larger accommodation blocks. A donkey waits at the right-hand side while spectators cluster along the boundary, including children in shorts, adults in summer clothes and older holidaymakers standing or seated near the front. The accommodation behind has open balcony walkways, outside staircases and broad windows, with more people leaning over the rails to watch from above, giving the scene a strong sense of how these novelty events drew interest across the camp. Rather than the race itself, this photograph captures the anticipation beforehand, when competitors, organisers and onlookers were all gathering into place for one of the camp’s familiar daytime attractions.
