This 1966 view at Pontins Osmington Bay shows the pool terrace packed with holidaymakers stretched out on the paving in the sunshine, sitting along the wall, or gathered beside the water at the far end. The terrace itself is a strong period detail, laid out in large pink, grey and cream slabs, while the crowd is full of mid-1960s holiday clothing, from swimsuits and straw hats to sandals, short-sleeved shirts and smart summer dresses. Rather than an organised contest, this looks like an ordinary busy afternoon around the pool, with sunbathing, chatting and spectating all taking place at once. It is a good, crowded study of the social side of camp life, where the poolside paving became as much a communal sun deck as a route around the water.
