One of the fair’s more exotic attractions, the Polynesian Pavilion aimed to bring a slice of the South Pacific to Flushing Meadows. Surrounded by palm trees, thatched structures, and a lagoon-like setting, the exhibit featured live cultural demonstrations rather than static displays. According to the official guidebook, “beautiful Polynesian girls pilot outrigger canoes and dive for real pearl oysters, which were transplanted to Flushing Meadow from Pacific pearl-growing beds.”
Visitors could watch traditional dances, sample island food, and purchase crafts, while the lagoon—complete with imported oyster stock—served as both stage and spectacle. Though more theatrical than authentic, the pavilion reflected the fair’s broader promise: to let guests travel the world in a single afternoon, without ever leaving New York.
