Two police officers in Queensway, Bayswater, London, in 1976, photographed on a sunny day with the frontage of Pearl Stewart at 47–49 Queensway behind them. The male officer wears the traditional custodian helmet, while the female officer stands beside him in a short-sleeved white shirt and check-patterned cap, a useful period detail in itself. Behind them, Pearl Stewart’s bold red lettering and patterned awnings give the street a distinctly mid-1970s shopping-centre feel, while a yellow van and other passing traffic recede along Queensway towards the Underground roundel in the distance. The shop has long since disappeared, and the site is now occupied by Starbucks, making this a valuable record of an everyday Bayswater streetscape that has since changed considerably.
